Chennai airport to get first multi-level car parking facility
The Chennai International Airport will get its first multilevel car parking facility as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in principle has agreed to the request of the Chennai airport director in this regard.

A team from Delhi had visited the airport to study the feasibility and identified the land near the airport metro station. The multi-level car parking, which can hold more than 1000 cars, will be developed commercially on build, own and operate (BOO) model, airport director G Chandramouli, said.
“AAI has agreed to the proposal and now they will sum up the commercial proposal. It will be on a build, own and operate model. When the airport expansion happens, the present parking lot will be under stress due to movement of construction materials. So, we need a multi-level car parking,” Chandramouli said.
As per the plan, the AAI would be inviting parties to build the multi-level car parking with an offer to own and operate it for up to 30 years. After the 30 years’ period, it would be handed over to the AAI, sources said.
So, the private company that wins the tender would collect the parking fee and maintain the parking area. It would function as per the guidelines of the AAI on parking fee, sources added. Once the commercial model is finalised, AAI would be issuing tenders.
The airport expansion works are expected to start in a year’s time as the approval from Public Investments Board is awaited. When the expansion works begin, the old terminals at the airport would be demolished and the present parking areas could be allocated for storing and transportation of construction materials and demolition debris.
So, Chennai airport authorities expect to get the multi-level parking ready prior to the commencement of the expansion works.
