CM hikes food allowance for BC, AD hostel students
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy has increased the food allowance provided for the inmates of government-run Adi Dravidar and Backward Classes hostels in the state. It has been decided to hike the allowance to keep up with the inflation in prices of food items, said an official release.

For the hostel inmates studying in schools, the allowance has been hiked from Rs 755 to Rs 900 in both the AD and BC hostels. For college students, the food grant has gone up to Rs 1,000 from the present Rs 875, the release added.Â
It further stated that the new allocation would be provided from the current academic year itself. The increased payment to be made from June 2017 for the college and school hostel inmates would benefit 86,807 students of 1,338 BC hostels and another 1.38 lakh students boarding in 1,714 AD hostels across the state.Â
The hike was expected to cost the exchequer Rs 12.18 crore for the BC Welfare Department and another 19.77 crore for the AD Welfare Department, the release noted. Provision of smart canes doubled The Chief Minister also doubled the provision for providing glowing smart canes for the visually challenged to 10,000.
