There were no passengers as the derailment happened between yard and station on Kancheepuram route around quarter past  12 noon.

Officials said that the sixth bogey of a 12 car EMU derailed on its way to Chengalpattu station from where it was set to depart to Beach station. Senior southern railway (SR) officials said the cause of the derailment would be ascertained only after examining the rolling stock. The derailed train was cleared and the line leading to Kancheepuram was cleared at 3.25pm.

“Both up and down lines on Tambaram – Chengalpattu section were clear. There was only one service on Kancheepuram route, and that too after 5pm. No train service was affected,” said a senior SR officer. However, a railway spokesperson said the derailment had affected signals briefly and there was a minor delay in moving trains from the yard to Chengalpattu railway station.
