15 kg drug found in cargo bound for Malaysia

Smuggling of psychotropic substances seems to be picking up once again in Chennai as the Narcotics Control Bureau officials intercepted a consignment of Pseudo Ephedrine on Monday and arrested two persons.

The 14.9 kg consignment concealed in fake tea packets were to be smuggled to Malaysia, an NCB press release here said. The NCB officials have also arrested two persons -Rahman Usman Bhai and Usman Bhai Hameed Shah. 
NCB officials intercepted these passengers after getting an intelligence alert regarding smuggling of the substance. The sale and possession of the contraband is controlled by the Drug Control General of India. Pseudo Ephedrine in only meant to be sold and possessed for medicinal purpose only. 
The NCB sources said the passengers were about to board an Air Asia flight to Malaysia on Sunday and the consignment was concealed in 25 packets of fake branded tea packets. 
The drug cartels use Pseudo Ephedrine to manufacture Methamphetamine, which is widely abused as a party drug, mostly in South East Asian countries. Pseudo Ephedrine is one of the most smuggled psychotropic substances to South East Asia from Tamil Nadu. 
The seized contraband is worth around Rs 1 crore. NCB has also launched an investigation to find the their connection with the Malaysian drug cartel. Till October last year, 44,960 kg of Ephedrine has been seized across the country.
