Corporation holds source segregation training for 600 conservancy staff

Under the Swachh Bharat mission, the civic body has been promoting source segregation in a big way - through training programs for the staff and door-to-door awareness initiatives among residents. 

The training program was presided by S Gopala Sundara Raj, Regional Deputy Commissioner (South) and conducted by Dr TG Srinivvasan, Health Education Officer. Raj said, “Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, as a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Government of India is starting a massive awareness program on source segregation - for residents and conservancy workers. We will be distributing pamphlets to individual households on source segregation and what materials are recyclable and those that can be composted. Our conservancy staff have taken a mass pledge to follow source segregation.” 

In wards which already have a Corporation compost yard, source segregation will soon become mandatory. The conservancy staff have been cooperating with source segregation, said Srinivvasan. “Over 600 conservancy staff, working in South region, underwent a training program, focussing on improper handling of waste and the harmful effects of non-segregation of waste. The staff were keen to deal with residents who don’t source segregate the waste. For this, we have asked our conservancy staff to distribute pamphlets and speak to people on the need for source segregation,” concluded Srinivvasan.
