Hi-tech cardiac procedure saves Malay patient

M Baaskaran Subramaniam, a resident of Malaysia and a native of Tamil Nadu, suffered from palpitations for long. Constantly feeling uneasy, fainting spells and seizures were his routine despite having undergone the procedure for Arrthythmia over two years ago. Wanting to find relief, he approached a doctor in the city for treatment.

Thanks to the 3D Electroanatomical Mapping System of the Heart used by the doctor, the  businessman is now free from pain and continues his daily activities normally. According to cardiologists, the technology can control and cure heart rhythm abnormalities with the highest levels of accuracy. This can take cardiac care in the country to the next level, they say.

“An individual suffering from abnormalities of the heart rhythm tends to have palpitations, episodes of fainting, fits, seizures and sometimes face sudden death. As these symptoms can also be attributed to conditions of high sugar or low sugar, the problem of Rhythm Disorder is often overlooked,” said Dr Ulhas M Pandurangi, Chief Cardiac Electrophysiologist, Madras Medical Mission. Less radiation, more accuracy and the ability to limit a physician’s error while treating arrhythmia, are some of the benefits of the new technology, which the city hospital had introduced recently.

The earlier conventional method would only give 2D pictures of the heart, making it difficult for electrophysiologists to identify the errors in the heart. “Due to this, we would refrain from treating complex arrhythmia. But now the new technology has made things easier,” added Dr Ulhas. Unlike the conventional method which costs around Rs 7 lakh, the 3D technology is more affordable, costing around Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh, he added.
