T Nagar shop being razed after collapse of interiors
The demolition procedures of the seven-storey showroom in T-Nagar started around 4 pm on Thursday after a team of engineers and experts surveyed the site in the morning. The move to demolish the building was taken after the floors collapsed due to the excessive heat in the wee hours of Thursday.

At 4 pm, lorries of debris started arriving at the site, to be dumped near the parking area of the building, to create an artificial ramp. A senior police officer said, “The demolition will be carried out with three jaw cutter machines. A ramp is being created so that the machines can get the required elevation to reach the top floors.”
The residents living around the building were evacuated. An official from the district administration said, “We will begin the demolition early on Friday morning.” The process is being delayed due to small fires, which kept erupting within the building.
The PWD and Greater Chennai Corporation is involved in the procedure, while private parties have been roped in for dismantling the structure, sources said. Health Minister Vijaya Baskar, said that a medical team comprising 10 doctors from Madras Medical College and ambulances are on the spot. Revenue minister Udayakumar said, “The aim is to douse the fire completely and demolish the structure without affecting the public.”
