Deemed varsities to fill PG medical seats based on NEET

The 59 seats in deemed universities and 19 in self-financed colleges that lay vacant after the last day of the second phase of PG counselling on Tuesday were handed over to the respective institutes to be filled based on the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) merit, said Dr Edwin Joe, Director of Medical Education (DME).

Endorsing this as the procedure evolved by Government of India, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said, “After the counselling session is exhausted, a merit list of 1:10 candidates are given to the institutes to fill. As these seats are ‘All India’ in character, candidates tend to take up the colleges of their choice, which may be in another part of the country.”

225 candidates of the 4147 who applied for deemed universities, attended to fill a total of 194 seats in deemed universities, while 147 candidates of a total of 2755 who applied, attended to fill a total of 47 seats in self-financing colleges.

“As we have completed counselling for the 50 per cent state quota, we have handed over the vacant seats to the institutes to be filled under the 50 per cent All India Quota. The seats are for courses that are usually not preferred,” added Dr Joe.

As this procedure was introduced with the NEET, experts state that confusion will prevail until all the states get used to the concept. “This chaos during counselling will surely get sorted out by next year as counselling will now be conducted by the Director General of Health Services,” said a source.

Criticising the method in which a ‘good move’ like NEET is being carried out, Activist Jawahar Shanmugam said, “The Common Entrance Test should be conducted in a systematic and organised manner. Though it was introduced to provide some solution to the problem of capitation fess, it has been creating problems day in and day out.”
