Thirumurugan Gandhi detained under Goondas Act
The Chennai City police on Monday slapped Goondas Act on May 17 Movement Founder Thirumurugan Gandhi for attempting to stage a protest on Marina last week in support of Lankan Tamils.
Chennai
When activists of May 17 Movement and other organisations assembled in Marina beach front, where all forms of agitations and protests were banned in the wake of pro-Jallikattu protests in January this year, police arrested them and remanded in judicial custody.
Although the Marina beach was out of bounds for any protests or gathering, members of the May 17 Movement attempted to hold a candlelight vigil to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka, which is held annually. Police picked up 249 people who came to participate in the candle vigil. Citing pendency of other cases against him, police today detained him under the Goondas Act, which meant that he could not come out on bail for a year.
