Heavy rains lash districts, elude city

Kathiri (dog days), which is the peak of summer in Tamil Nadu is turning out to be a blessing in disguise with heavy rains lashing interior districts across the state on Tuesday night. However, there was no respite for Chennaiites as the city received only a drizzle in several parts.

Officials at the Regional Metrological Centre (RMC) have predicted drizzles in a few areas of the city, and thunderstorms in suburbs in the coming days.

According to the RMC officials, ever since the dog days began on May 4, the city has been experiencing lower temperature. Though the sky remained cloudy on Wednesday, the weathermen have ruled out the possibility for rains in the city. On the contrary, the central and delta districts like Tiruchy, Thanjavur and Pudukottai received rains on Tuesday.

Dr S Balachandran, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, told DTNext , “Chances are remote for Chennai city to receive heavy rains. There may be drizzles in a few areas. The suburbs might witness heavy rains. There will be heavy to very heavy rains in interior districts in western and central regions of Tamil Nadu for two more days.”

Chennai city on Wednesday witnessed a maximum temperature of 34.7 (Nungambakkam), and a minimum temperature of 28.7, the lowest since dog days began.

According to the RMC website, Tuesday’s upper air trough now runs from north interior Karnataka to south Tamil Nadu and extends up to 0.9 km above mean sea level. Further, an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over south coastal Andhra Pradesh between 1.5 km and 3.6 km above mean sea level.

Meanwhile, weather bloggers have predicted that Chennai city could get rains, if the newly formed trough moves towards east. K Srikanth, a weather blogger in the city, said, “Chennai city would receive only drizzles in a few areas.” Areas like Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram received rains on Tuesday, he added.
