Con woman flees with gold chain, held
The Peerkankaranai police on Thursday arrested a woman who managed to hoodwink a housewife and escaped with her gold chain weighing 5.25 sovereigns.

According to the police, Kalyani approached Geethasri (35), a resident of Rajarajan Street, Mudichur, on February 23, posing like a fortune teller, and convinced the latter to  allow her inside to conduct a puja to ward off the evil from her house.Â
During the puja, Kalayani demanded Geethasri to the keep the gold chain she was wearing in a plastic container. Later, the woman took money for the puja and left. However, when Geethasri opened the plastic container after a few days, she found only stones inside to her shock. She then lodged a complaint with the Peerkanakarani police.Â
Police formed a special team and launched a hunt for the accused. They later picked up Kalyani and recovered the gold chain from her. Police said Kalayani diverted the attention of the victim during the pooja and kept stones inside the plastic container after taking the gold chain. The arrested accused have been produced before the magistrate court and has been remanded to judicial custody.
Duo escape with 19 sovereigns from showroomÂ
The Elephant Gate police are searching for two unidentified persons, who tricked jewellery shop employee and escaped with 19 sovereigns of gold jewellery.Â
Police said that Hasan Ali, who runs a jewellery-making unit and is a resident of Ponnappan Street, Sowcarpet, on Thursday instructed his employee, Arif Raj, to deliver 19 sovereigns of gold jewellery to a jewellery shop at Nalliappan Street. When Arif Raj was on his way to deliver the jewellery, two persons approached him, saying that they were sent by Hasan Ali to conduct special pujas for the ornaments. Â Arif Raj reportedly believed this and handed over the jewellery to the duo. They acted as if they were doing puja on the jewels for some time and suddenly ran away from the spot. Following this, Hasan Ali lodged a complaint with the Elephant Gate police. Police have registered a case and questioned Arif Raj.
