Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation for both the units on October 15, last year, following which construction works have just began there.

“If all went well, it would be nearly four years before the units could start commercial production,” sources in TANGEDCO told DTNext.

The Minister’s demand for getting the entire output of KKNPP was based on the fact that Andhra Pradesh has successfully got such an allotment from one of its thermal power stations, the sources added.

The Union government, through the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, had worked out a power sharing agreement between the four southern states and Puducherry for KKNPP’s first two units, whereby Tamil Nadu got the highest share of 925 MW, followed by Karnataka with 442 MW, Andhra Pradesh 300 MW, Kerala 266 MW and Puducherry 67 MW. However, the state received an increased 1,125 MW due to its higher peak power demand, the minister said. He added that Tamil Nadu’s demand should be considered as KKNPP in addition to being situated in the state was also provided all facilities by the state government.

TANGEDCO officials felt that Thangamani’s other demand for Rs 17,000 crore to convert overhead lines in Chennai limits to underground cables, convert pillar boxes to HRC fuse-6-way pillar boxes post Cyclone Vardah would be positively considered by the Centre.
