The Coastal Security Group (CSG) would be conducting the training programme for fisher youth, with a specific focus to hone their skills that are needed to clear the tests by the Navy and Coast Guard.

A press release from Coastal Security Group here said that annually, 300 fisher youth from 13 coastal districts of Tamil Nadu would be selected and trained in six batches, each having 50 trainees. The state Fisheries Department and Tamil Nadu Fisheries University are also partnering with CSG for this training programme.

CSG and Fisheries Department have already started the process of selecting the trainees for this year’s programme. Every selected youth will be provided with free accommodation, food, boarding, lodging and a stipend of Rs 1,000 per month. Tamil Nadu government has set aside Rs 1.04 crore for this programme.

Physical measurement and screening of the aspiring fishing youth have been conducted at 15 centres across the coastal districts with the assistance of District Sports Authorities. After this screening process, 310 youth will be shortlisted and 300 of them will be selected for the training camp, which is scheduled to begin shortly, the release added.

The recruitment drive for the Navy and Coast Guard takes place during March and September and the training programme is scheduled in such a way that the youth could attend the selection programmes immediately after completing the training. The CSG personnel, who are trained commandos, will train the youth so that they could easily meet the eligibility requirements of the Navy and Coast Guard.
