Renovate Thiruvalluvar memorial: PIL
The Madras High Court has impleaded the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE) as a respondent in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to renovate the memorial of Tamil Saint and poet Thiruvalluvar located at Mylapore in Chennai.

The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar, before whom the PIL came up for hearing on Wednesday, directed the Government Pleader to get instructions on the issue and posted the matter for further hearing to June 13, 2017. The petitioner, R Srinivasa Rao, an advocate, had submitted that the memorial in Mylapore was last renovated in 1935 by Kanniyappa Nayakkar and Subramani Chettiyar and since then has been lying in ruins, with none to care for.
Pointing out that despite the Tamil Nadu government celebrating January 15 as Thiruvalluvar day in his honour, it had not bothered to safeguard the memorial. He said since his plea to the government had failed to evoke any response he was left with no option but to approach the court.Â
He sought the court to direct the authorities to spruce up the 12 grounds in which the memorial is located, appoint a special officer to carryout regular maintenance and to declare the place as a world class tourist spot.
