The robbers had sprayed chilli powder inside the house to divert sniffer dogs and wiped out their finger prints.

Police said, Karthikeyan, a software engineer residing in Srinivasa Nagar, Rajakilpakkam, had left for Delhi and his aged mother Mythili had gone to meet her other son, who lives in the same area.

When Mythili returned home on Tuesday morning, she was shocked to see the back door of the house broken open and chilli powder sprinkled all over the place.

Realising that burglars had entered the house, Mythili checked inside and found that 165 sovereigns of gold jewellery kept inside a bureau and four kg of silver kept elsewhere were missing.

The burglars reportedly took away the property documents of the house as well. Mythili then informed Karthikeyan and her other son about the burglary and lodged a complaint with the Selaiyur police.

A police team came to the spot and held inspections. The officials are trying to get footages from private CCTV cameras installed in the area, to identify the burglars. They are also looking at the list of burglars, who adopt a similar modus operandi, to crack the case.

    Further probe is on.
