Police told to extend online accident tracking utility to all STCs
The Madras High Court, hailing the State Crime Research Bureau (SCRB) for coming with an on online platform -Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS)- for sharing documents of accident cases and simplifying the process of accident claims, has directed it to make the facility available to all the State Transport Corporations on the same terms as is available to insurance companies.

Justice PN Prakash on holding that a court directive had spurred SCRB to develop an online platform through CCTNS in relation to registration of FIRs, collection of documents and filing of final reports, said, “This court deems it a bounden duty to commend the police administration for its ceaseless and time consuming effort in putting together an online platform, the first of its kind in the nation.”
Also, referring to the status report filed by the DGP’s office on April 12, 2017 and the GO issued on April 11, paving way for the insurance companies to access the detailed accident reports (DAR) on payment of a nominal fee, the judge said, “The GO, which is confined to insurance companies alone at present, should be extended to all State Transport Corporations.”
However, the judge also accorded three months’ time as sought by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Law and Order, to extend the facility to victims’ and accused. The case has been posted for further hearing to July 15.
