Farmer's issue : Flash demo by youth snaps traffic on Kathipara flyover

Taking the road users and office-goers by surprise, a group of youths, including girls, led by film director V Gowthaman, locked one side of the iconic Kathipara flyover at Guindy on the arterial GST road in the city, and staged a snap agitation in support of the farmers who were staging a stir at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for the last one month.

The protestors also locked one side of the flyover that connects the city  from Tambaram and airport, with a heavy metal chain.

Expressing solidarity with the agitating farmers in New Delhi, they shouted  slogans against the Centre for the delay in setting up the Cauvery Management Board as mandated by the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

They also urged the Centre to concede the genuine demands of the Centre, failing which the agitation by the youths would turn into massive protests.

Leading the stir, Gowthaman raised slogans in support of the farmers and  warned of similar protests throughout Tamil Nadu, similar to the massive  pro-Jallikattu protests in January, if the farmers' demands were not met.

Traffic came to a grinding halt on the flyover, hitting the office-goers hard and the police used hacksaw blades to cut the chain and restored normal traffic.

As they refused to heed to the appeal by the police to disperse from the  scene, about 20 youths were forcibly arrested and whisked away in a van.

By the time they were arrested by the police, traffic stagnated in all the four directions of the flyover, with vehicles seen piled up in large numbers.

Even few ambulances were also caught in the traffic snarl because of  the agitation.

Protest demonstrations by various organisations were also held in various parts of the city, with a group attempting to picket the Shastri Bhavan, housing several Central government offices.

However, police intervened and detained them.
