Australia, Japan, New Zealand, next destination for quality education
With the United States no longer promoting a conducive environment for Indian students to pursue their higher education, here is a look at a few alternative countries that provide quality education and are also cost-effective.

The ‘Open Doors Report’ compiled by 250 American colleges, showed a drop of 15 per cent in the number of Indian students opting for graduate courses and a 26 per cent drop in applications for undergraduate courses. In light of the current scenario, countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Japan are quickly becoming the go to destinations for pursuing higher education.
Popular courses in Australia:
The most popular courses for Indian students in Australia are in the field of Management, Engineering and related technologies; Information Technology and Hospitality. Indian students are increasingly seeking courses such as Archaeology, Earth and Marine Sciences, Mineral and Mining Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmacology and Veterinary Science.
The Australian government also offers a slew of scholarships to Indian students to soften the burden on students with regards to tuition fees. The ‘Australia Awards scholarships and fellowships’ funded by the Australian government offers students an opportunity to undertake study, research and professional development.
For 2017, the government has earmarked 3,500 of these scholarships for international students. ‘International Postgraduate Research Scholarships’ (IPRS) enables international students to undertake a postgraduate research qualification in Australia and gain experience with leading Australian researchers.
To pursue an undergraduate course, students must have successfully completed Class 12. Some undergraduate courses may also have specific pre-requisite subjects. For postgraduate courses, apart from satisfactory completion of at least one degree at the undergraduate level, some institutions may also take research ability or relevant work experience into consideration.
Japan on the lookout for foreign students:
Another popular destination for higher studies is Japan. MR Ranganathan, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Centre of ABKAOTS Dosokai, says, “The Japanese population is gradually aging. With a dwindling younger age group, the Japanese government is looking for foreign students to supplement its workforce to sustain economic growth.”
To apply for the visa, students must receive a certificate of eligibility (CoE) from the college at which they are applying for admission. To receive the CoE, students must provide the college with a financial statement on how they intend to fund the course and a copy of their mark sheet. Students must then submit the CoE to the Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai. The Japanese government offers 50 to 100 per cent scholarships to meritorious students.
Apart from this, colleges offer post admission scholarships to cover their living expenses. Students will also be entitled to work 28 hours a week in a part-time job to make ends meet. New Zealand institutions provide excellent learning opportunities and student care in a safe and welcoming environment.
The education system encourages inventive thinking and teaching techniques that reach far beyond traditional rote learning. Management and Commerce, Business, Information Technology and Engineering are currently the most popular courses with Indian students. However, niche courses in newer disciplines with good job prospects, are gaining popularity. Such courses include Sports Management, Hospitality, Adventure Tourism, Aviation, Cyber Security, Film and Animation.
Second round of New Zealand Excellence Awards:
Education New Zealand (ENZ) will be launching their second round of New Zealand Excellence Awards featuring partial scholarships for deserving Indian students with an overall budget of NZ$ 160,000 (Rs 17.30 lakh). These scholarships have been jointly funded by ENZ and all eight NZ universities.
