Coffin campaign shocks voters
In a bizarre poll campaign, former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam faction of the AIADMK used a replica of a coffin with a figurine of late CM Jayalalithaa on top of it to seek votes in RK Nagar assembly segment on Thursday evening.
Chennai
What took everybody by surprise was that others in the same faction were unaware of this as they along with candidate E Madhusudanan and leader OPS were campaigning at the Power house area while the coffin campaign was accompanied by OPS faction member and former minister K Pandiarajan at the slum clearance board tenements at Korukukpet.
The campaign started at the slum clearance board tenements and when it reached Bharathi Nagar, police intervened and said that the coffin could not be used and so took it away and kept it in a nearby office. Meanwhile, agitated supporters raised slogans accusing rival faction leader and candidate TTV Dinakaran of having sent men to remove the coffin model. But Dinakaran’s men were not at the scene of the incident.
When the coffin was being taken away, some women rent the air with cries resembling those at Jayalalithaa’s funeral. Then Isari Velan’s daughter Azhagu Tamilselvi herself arrived in her car and carted away the make-believe coffin.
TTV Dinakaran faction spokesperson and former minister Vaigai Selvam when asked for comments was shocked and said, “How can they do this? It is demeaning her life and achievements.”
Similarly, Pandiarajan’s PA, when contacted, said the former minister was campaigning. Asked about the coffin, he asked, “Is this correct? Please tell us.” Prodded further he added, “It was the handiwork of Azhagu Tamilselvi.”
