No breakthrough yet in German tourist rape case
The Mamallapuram police are still groping in the dark over the German tourist gang-rape case even after four special teams headed by inspectors were formed under the supervision of Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police Santhosh Hadimani.

Sources said that the police officials on Tuesday detained 11 persons from Mamallapuram.
However, they let them off after a brief inquiry. Police also suspect that the accused might be either from Chennai or its suburbs and not a local.
According to them, top police officials in Mamallapuram and Kancheepuram have instructed their subordinates to keep the details of investigation a secret till the case is solved.
On Monday, the police released a sketch of the accused but could not progress further as it did not match with any of the suspects who were rounded up. Though police claimed they had two prime suspects in the custody, there is no further progress in the investigation.
“We are interrogating them at a secluded place and we will crack the case soon in a day or two. Since such cases are sensitive, we are cautious,” said a police officer, on condition of anonymity. Meanwhile, the police department in Kancheepuram is under mounting pressure from all quarters especially the German embassy.
It may be noted that the German, who dozed off near the beach, was dragged by two men to a secluded spot from a private beach resort and raped four days ago.
