R Soundararajan, president, Koyambedu Vegetable Market Association said, “On a regular day, the market is supplied by 350 to 400 trucks. However, the market on Friday saw arrival of only 250 lorries. Further, there was a possibility that the supply may gradually decline in the coming days, pushing up the prices.”
Vegetables like beans, onions and ladies’ fingers had already witnessed a hike of around Rs 5 to 10, he added. A member of Chennai Goods Transport Association said fuel movement has not been affected, as those carriers have not participated in the strike.
“We will maintain the same till April 20, after which a decision on the strike will be taken,” he said. Similarly, Nijalingam, president, Chennai Private Water Tankers Association, said that considering water was essential to people, they would not take part in the protest.
