With this transfer, George also gets the dubious distinction of the first city CoP who had been transferred three times by the Election Commission (EC).
S George became the Chennai Commissioner of Police for the first time on September 19, 2012. He was shifted by the EC during the Parliament elections on April 8, 2014 and was replaced by JK Tripathi. But, the Jayalalithaa government brought George back as the city CoP on May 21, 2014.
However, he was shifted again during the RK Nagar bypoll on October 10, 2015 and TK Rajendran was brought in as city CoP. George replaced TK Rajendran and once again became the city CoP on September 7, 2016.
The EC once again expressed its dissatisfaction over George continuing in the key post during the crucial RK Nagar by-election and ordered his transfer on Saturday. ADGP Karan Singha has been posted as the new city CoP. However, this is for the first time that George has been kept under vacancy reserve during his transfer from the post of city Commissioner of Police.
New city Commissioner of Police Karan Singha took charge as soon as the orders were issued by the government on Saturday and held discussions with the senior police officials.
Later talking to the media, Karan Singha said the peaceful conduct of RK Nagar by-election was the first priority of city police and it would focus on law and order maintenance and crime prevention.
“Traffic has always been my favourite subject and we have plans to ease the traffic congestion in the city. The timings at Lakshman Shruthi signal need to be adjusted to avoid traffic blocks and these things would be done after consulting with Additional Commissioner, Traffic, Abhay Kumar Singh,” Karan Singha said.
He said that a detailed draft regarding the security arrangements for RK Nagar bypoll has been prepared and the details would be released once the EC gives its approval.
