DMK going all out for Ganesh

Unmindful of the two warring factions of AIADMK gathering all media attention, the DMK has been silently going on with a micro-level campaign to make its candidate the proverbial dark horse in the April 12 by-poll in RK Nagar.

DMK working president MK Stalin has brought half of his district secretaries to the constituency to throw their weight behind Maruthu Ganesh. Over 30 of the 65 district secretaries have been roped in for campaigning in the Assembly segment and the party is planning to bring in more, if need be.

Each district secretary has been allocated 10 booths and they have been instructed to go door to door, a senior DMK leader told DTNext. He said that critics were underestimating their candidate. “Judging the winnability of a person merely based on individual popularity may not be an accurate assessment of the ground reality,” he added.

Stalin has ensured that ex-ministers too hit the campaign trail in full force at RK Nagar. On Saturday, former Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi met the voters. DMK headquarters secretary Duraimurugan campaigned in Tondiarpet and Korukkupet earlier in the week. Even party general secretary K Anbazhagan, who had abstained from May 2016 election campaign owing to ill health and age factor, was spotted at RK Nagar. He opened the election office of the party candidate Ganesh last week.

“We could steal the thunder at RK Nagar if Stalin can redo his ‘Namakku Naamey’ style of campaigning that is reaching out to the masses in the area directly from the first week of April,” said a DMK source.

Though opinion makers and critics may get swayed by the power of TTV Dinakaran and the popularity of E Madhusudhanan, it would be oversight to discredit the fact that a tough fight between the two warring AIADMK factions would also brighten the chances of DMK candidate, the source added.
