    ‘Ashwin was soft-spoken, easy person’

The racing fraternity plunged into grief after waking up to hear the news of the untimely demise of Chennai racer Ashwin Sundar. One of the most popular racers on the block, Ashwin was a two-time MRF National Champion before funding issues forced him to stall his racing career.

According to friends, the Chennai racer was full of energy and enthusiasm on the track. He was loved by all and was even ‘adopted’ by CMD at TT Logistics & Cargo Pvt Ltd, Arun Vasu, for a father-son race at the Madras Motorsport Race Track and the due emerged victorious in it.

Vasu reminisced the incident that happened seven years ago and said it was difficult to accept reality. “I knew him for those years when I was into racing. He was a sweet kid and was 15 then. We had a great time racing together in the saloon cup. He was always ahead of others in races,” he added.

Ashwin’s racing teammate and former national champion Aditya Patel was devastated. Ashwin and Aditya were teammates in go-kart for a couple of years in various races in India and Malaysia before becoming fierce competitors. “I knew him for more than a decade and a half now. He was one of the most competitive drivers on the block and he would never give up in any race. I am lost for words,” Patel said.

The two later went on to become roommates while racing in Germany. “He was soft spoken and easy to deal with. He was only fussy about food at times,” Aditya recalled.

Former racer Ayub Khan said Ashwin was a fighter. “We all raced together in the JK Tyre championships. He used to be the youngest driver in the Group-N category. I feel sorry for his family and his friends. We all have lost a great soul,” Ayub added.
