Arrested Lankan fishermen produced in Egmore court
A day after the Indian Coast guard arrested 10 Sri Lankan fishermen on the charges of poaching into Indian territory, two Sri Lankan fishermen were arrested by the Tamil Nadu marine police when they reached Kodiakarai shores on Thursday morning after their vessel developed a technical snag and drifted due to heavy winds.

According to police sources, the duo was identified as Giriraj (42), Yasendran (17) both Sri Lankan Tamil fishermen hailing from Point Pedro town in Jaffna district. Preliminary inquiries found that the two fishermen had ventured for fishing from the Point Pedro coast in their fibre boat with the registration number OFRP-A4339 on Wednesday.Â
As their outboard engine developed some technical snag, the boat was carried by the wind and reached Kodiakarai on Thursday morning around 8 am.Â
On learning about their landing, the Vedaranyam marine police arrested the duo and seized their boat, a 300-kg fishing net, a catch of about 50 kg of tuna fish and two signal lights. Police sources said that the duo had been booked by the marine police under the provisions of Indian Passport Act, for illegal entry and they were subsequently sent to the Egmore Metropolitan Magistrate court for further judicial action.
