TV shows breach rules, says lawyer
A complaint has been lodged at the office of the Commissioner of Police against two shows being telecast by two private television channels, alleging violation of human rights and Juvenile Justice Act.
Chennai
SS Balaji, an advocate practising at the Madras High Court, in his complaint stated that the two shows ‘Nijangal’ and ‘Solvathel lam Unmai in private TV channels were conducting kangaroo courts in the pretext of counselling and mediation in family disputes. Nijangal was being hosted by actor Khushbu and Solvathellam Unmai by Lakshmy Ramakrishnan.
He claimed that “The content is meant for adults as different aspects of family disputes are discussed. However, the show is slotted for prime time which is against the broadcast regulations. The hosts are merely familiar personalities, who are chosen due to publicity reasons. They are not qualified or eligible to offer counselling”, he said.
These shows violated the Cable Television Network Rules 1994 and The Cable Television Regulations Act 1995, he added.
