Differently-abled community demand apology from Radha Ravi

The Tamilnadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled & Caregivers (TARTDAC) on Saturday condemned actor Radha Ravi for referring the differently-abled children as a comparison to criticise some politicians and rival parties at a political gathering.

They staged a protest outside his residence on Saturday, demanding an apology from him. A group of more than 100 differently abled people joined the protest organised by TARTDAC in Teynampet on Saturday.  The group, objecting to the comments that actor made on March 1 during DMK leader M K Stalin’s birthday celebrations, said that differently-abled continue to be mocked despite innumerable awareness campaigns. The actor had stated, along with gestures imitating disabilities, that some politicians were like the disabled children who wanted to play with normal kids.

Talking to DTNext , B Radhakrishnan of TARTDAC, who was part of the protest, said, “Such remarks have been made by many people time and again. This time actor Radha Ravi has stooped very low and used derogatory words while referring the differently abled. This goes to show how insensitive he is towards those with disabilities. We want strict action to be taken against him, as the current Disability Laws pose a hefty fine and imprisonment for people ridiculing and demeaning the disabled. The action should set an example for everyone.”

The group has also demanded an apology from the actor, said S Namburajan, who is state general secretary of the group. “When he was confronted by some of them from the group, he denied attempting to insult and said he was just drawing a parallel. In fact, he even refused to tender an apology for his remarks. It is extremely upsetting to see that Radha Ravi has no care or concern for the community or the laws that prevent any form of discrimination against the community,”  he added.
