Four women robbed off gold in 24 hours

What is more worrying is that these miscreants are now targeting two-wheeler riders, mostly women. The snatchers knock the targets down from their vehicle and rob them off valuables even while they are on the road bleeding and crying for help. 

In the four cases reported on Thursday and Friday, the robbers took away gold chains weighing 20 sovereigns and a cell phone. While three of these snatchings took place in Virugambakkam area on Thursday evening, the fourth was reported from Royapettah on Friday morning. Police said, a 30-year-old woman, Catherine, was on her way to the office from her Peters Road residence on her two-wheeler on Friday. Around 8 am, while she was riding on the Royapettah bridge, two men who were following her on another bike, rear ended her vehicle. Catherine fell down and hit her head on the side walls of the bridge. While the profusely bleeding woman was crying for help, one of the men got down from the bike, snatched her gold chain weighing six sovereigns and her mobile phone. Even before Catherine realised what was happening, the duo sped away from the spot, said police. Based on a complaint, the police registered a case and are investigating. 

Earlier on Thursday, in what seems to be serial snatching, presumably by the same duo, three women lost their gold chains in Valasarawalkam and Virugambakkam areas. Police said Manimeghalai (45), a resident of Vembuliamman Street, Virugambakkam, was attacked when she was on her way to a nearby shop around 7 pm. Two men on a two-wheeler snatched her gold chain weighing seven sovereigns. Manimeghalai, fell down on the roadside. Before she could raise an alarm, the duo sped away. It is suspected that the same duo had snatched the gold chain, weighing three sovereigns, from Kalpana (38), a resident of Ganeshan Street. 

Police said Kalpana was on her way back home after shopping when the incident took place. The two snatchers targeted yet another woman in the same area and snatched her gold chain weighing four sovereigns as well. Later, the three women lodged complaints with the Virugambakkam police, who registered a case and are investigating. Chain snatching incidents have gone up once again in the city. Police are yet to find a way to control the miscreants as the intensified patrolling has not had any effect on chain snatching.
