    Class 12 exams set to begin today

    An estimated 9.30 lakh students, including 4.81 lakh girls and a transgender, would sit for the Class 12 board exams beginning in Tamil Nadu on March 2.

    The State government has made elaborate arrangements, including formation of flying squads, to prevent students from indulging in any malpractices. The exams would continue till March 31. The students are appearing for the exams from 6,737 schools. 

    Of them, 4.18 lakh are boys and 4.81 lakh are girls and one is transgender. A total of 5.69 lakh students would be appearing through Tamil medium. Similarly, 31,843 private candidates and 88 prisoners will also be taking up the exams, which would be held in 2,247 centres across the state. 

    The Directorate of Government Examinations said an extra time of one hour would be given for differently-abled students. To conduct the exams effectively, a team has been formed with the respective district collectors as its head. The team will also comprise of directors, joint directors of the school education department.  

    Strict guidelines have been issued to the students, and the exam centres have been declared as no phone zone and students who violate this would be sentenced to two years of jail. The government also announced opening of control rooms, which would function from 8 am to 8 pm from Thursday. 

    Helplines have also been opened to enable students to seek any information regarding the public exams or to register their grievances. The helpline numbers are 8012594114, 8012594115, 8012594122 and they would continue for the SSLC board exams also to be held later this month.
