The team on Wednesday visited Mannady in North Chennai and during the investigation, the Rajasthan officials found that Iqbal had raised funds for IS by falsely propagating that he was collecting money to build a mosque.
Iqbal, a resident of Mylapore, was running a mobile phone shop. He was arrested along with four other men while attempting to smuggle three kg of gold. The Rajasthan ATS also arrested Mohammad Jameel in Rajasthan for collecting Rs 3 lakh for the extremist group.
Police sources said Jameel and Iqbal worked together in Dubai before the latter returned to Chennai. However, the duo stayed in touch via Kik Messenger.
