Madras High Court bids farewell to Supreme Court-bound Kaul
Set to take over as judge of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of Madras High Court Sanjay Kishan Kaul informed in the open court on Wednesday that it was his last sitting here.
Chennai
When the proceedings commenced for the day at the first bench, an advocate was making a mention about a certain issue, when the Chief Justice said, today is his last day here so it would be better for him to take up the issue later. However, after handling the cases listed, he retired to his chambers for the day. Interestingly, court staff were seen lining up near his chamber to bid him farewell.
The Madras Bar Association also accorded him a farewell. Justice Kaul, who assumed charged in 2014 is known for the deft handling of protest by advocates with even a few of them laying midnight siege to his official residence and vandalising it. He retorted by roping in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) thereby safeguarding the High Court campus from external disturbances.Â
The way certain public interest litigations were dealt, pulling up the government for gross negligence and imposing a blanket ban on sale and registration of unauthorised layouts and mindless conversion of agricultural lands would be remembered. His order on the controversy surrounding the novel Madhorubagan by Perumal Murugan is considered an epic judgment.
