According to police, the 10-year-old victim was staying with her parents and siblings at a house on Bajanai Koil Street, Velampudur in Walajah taluk. She was a Class 5 student. On Sunday night, when her mother Radha and brothers returned home from work, the girl was lying dead in the house. Witnessing the marks around her daughter’s neck, Radha suspected that her daughter could have strangulated to death. Meanwhile, it also came to light that two grams of gold jewels that the victim was wearing missing along with Rs 10,000 in cash that was there in the house.

Subsequently, the victim’s family lodged a complaint with Ranipet police station. After investigations, the needle of suspicion fell on Moorthy (19), the elder brother of the girl, who kept himself away from the home after the death of the girl. Sensing foul play, police on Tuesday morning picked up Moorthy for the interrogation.

During questioning, the 19-year-old brother confessed to having murdered the girl and said that she remained a stumbling block to his love affair. Following his confession, police arrested him. In his statement, the accused said that he was studying at an ITI in Allikulam near Walajah where he developed a love affair with one of his classmates. When his mother came to know about his relationship, she opposed it, as the girl was from another community. But, he could not give up the affair and picked up a quarrel with his mother.

Since her mother cited Moorthy’s sister’s life as the reason for her objection, he started hating the girl. So, on Sunday night, he came home in  an inebriated condition. As no one was there in the house at that time, he smothered his sister with a pillow. “We suspected the youth, who was on the run after the murder. When interrogated, he admitted to his crime,” said a police official from the Ranipet police station.
