The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai predicted that due to the formation of a trough of low pressure over South-West Bay of Bengal there is a possibility of Chennai city receiving light rainfall in a few pockets.

The sky may remain overcast during the next 24 hours and there might be moderate showers in most parts of the southern districts, according to the weathermen. According to the RMC, the trough of low pressure at mean sea level over Comorin area and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean now lay over Maldives and its neighbourhood with an upper air cyclonic circulation aloft extending up to 2.1 km above mean sea level.
Dr S Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, said, “A trough of low pressure lies over Southwest Bay of Bengal and extends up to 0.9 km above mean sea level,”. The central parts of the state might experience heavy rains owing to the effect of the low pressure. Elaborating further, the director said.
“The low pressure will gradually lose its intensity, when it moves towards north and as a result, there will be mild rainfall in northern districts.” They were continuously monitoring the satellite imagery and delta districts in the state were already witnessing intermittent showers for the last few days, he added. Meanwhile, weather bloggers say that formation of a depression at this time of the year was nothing unusual. “There will usually be a trough of low pressure by the end of January but, it will not last long,” said Srikanth, a weather blogger from Chennai.
