Anti-socials’ presence forced police to evict protesters: Commissioner of Police
Praising the police for ‘great restraint and use of minimal force’, despite the widespread violence and mayhem in the city, Commissioner of Police S George said that infiltration of ‘anti-social’ and ‘anti-national’ elements in to the protest had compelled the police to evict the people from Marina.

In a first official press conference after taking over as the City Commissioner of Police for the second term, S George said that the violence was unleashed by the anti-socials, who had been instigated by people with vested interests. “We had deployed 7,000 police personnel in the city apart from TSP policemen to maintain law and order. Small protests broke out at 94 other locations in the city which led to a traffic pile up.
However, we had immediately sent our personnel to these places and got them cleared,” George said. To questions regarding the visuals of policemen indulging in violence and setting automobiles on fire, George said all the visuals were morphed images and the CCB would launch an investigation in to the case. He also cautioned troublemakers saying that stringent action would be taken against those indulging in violence. More police would be deployed in the city and night patrolling would be intensified. City police have already arrested 40 persons for indulging in violence. Ninty four police personnel were injured and 151 police vehicles were damaged, he said.
