    Two killed in New Year mishaps

    Two persons lost their lives on December 31 night as revellers stormed city roads to celebrate New Year. Both the men were killed after being run over by vehicles. City police said that over 120 persons were injured in incidents related to New Year celebrations across the city.

    In the first incident, a 19-year-old on a two-wheeler was fatally knocked down by a share auto on a bridge in Mambalam. The deceased, Muthu, an air-conditioner mechanic from Tanjore was staying in a lodge in Velachery. He was heading to Kodambakkam High Road from T Nagar when the Tata Ace coming from the opposite direction knocked him down. 

    The share-auto driver Vijyakumar (24), of Cuddalore has been arrested. Muthu’s body was sent to the Government Royapettah Government Hospital for a post mortem. In the second incident, a 53-yearold man walking down the road in an inebriated condition was run-over by an unknown vehicle. The victim, Murthy, of E Block in Ambedkar Nagar in ICF was crossing the road at Murugesan Nagar in Ambedkar Salai when the incident took place. 

    “The area was poorly lit and deserted. We are yet to identify the vehicle which caused the accident,” said a police source. He was taken to a private hospital and shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries around 8.30 am on Sunday. 

    Moreover, 120 persons in the city suffered injuries in various incidents related to New Year celebrations. The cases reported include road mishaps, injuries suffered while bursting fireworks and assaults. The Government Royapettah Hospital also reported around 41 cases on Saturday night. The police control room too received a good number of complaints. A police source said that most of the callers complained of drunken brawls, over-speeding and women harassment.

    Trip to celebrate New Year turns fatal for two
    A bike trip to Mamallapuram, to celebrate New Year, turned tragic for two youth from Kancheepuram after they were fatally knocked down by a tempo traveller on Saturday night.
    Their friend, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, is undergoing treatment at the Government General Hospital, Chennai. Police said, Naveen Kumar (25), Sadasivam (26) and Amalraj (25), all residents of Kadambur village near Maraimalai Nagar, Kancheepuram started off to Mamallapuram on a bike to celebrate New Year. When they were on the ECR near Pallavan Statue, a tempo traveller plying to Pondicherry from Chennai collided head on with the two-wheeler. The two-wheeler was thrown off the road and Naveen Kumar died on the spot. The other two sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital. Sadasivam died at the hospital while Amalraj was shifted to the intensive care ward at the Government General Hospital, Chennai.
