Dr S Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, told DTNext that “Saturday’s trough of low at mean sea level over south-east Bay of Bengal now lay over south-east and adjoining south-west Bay  of Bengal and was being  closely monitored through satellite imagery.”

If the trough of low pressure moves westwards, the coastal areas in  Tamil Nadu may receive rainfall and Chennai would get light rainfall, “However, it is too early to predict such a system,” the director said. Meanwhile weather bloggers are certain of rainfall and predict that the intensity of the low-pressure would be light.

Pradeep John, a city-based weather blogger said, “The new trough at present lies south-east of the Bay of Bengal and it will move towards the Andaman and Sri Lankan side in the next few days. After this, the trough can turn into low pressure and a depression.”

The blogger added that such a system would give rains in Tamil Nadu’s delta districts and there would be moderate rains in Chennai. Another blogger, Srikanth said, “This might be the last depression during this north-east monsoon season and its intensity would not be high.” It may be noted that the state had witnessed rainfall for the last time when Cyclone Vardah, which made landfall between Chennai and south Andhra Pradesh coast.
