For a ‘change’, toll plazas to transact in coupons
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will give each of the 42 toll plazas in Tamil Nadu Rs 5 lakh worth toll coupons to tide over the prevailing cash crunch and shortage of small change since demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes.
Chennai
“Toll coupons of Rs 100, Rs 50, Rs 20, Rs 10 and Rs 5 denominations can be purchased at any toll plaza and they can be used in toll plazas across the nation. They would be valid between December 8 and December 31 before which, the situation is expected to improve,” a Chennai toll plaza official said. The coupons would be in addition to the FAStag option — which are currently provided by Axis and ICICI bank offices at Ambattur and in some selected toll plazas across the state — and POS swipe machines which allows credit and debit cards for payment at toll booths. It may be recalled that toll plazas were ordered not to collect toll following the Centre’s demonetisation announcement on November 8 until the cash crunch eases. However, collection of toll resumed recently and plazas were instructed to accept Rs 500 notes. But problems erupted due to short of change as many started giving Rs 2,000 notes.
