Slice of Life: One should never give up

    Shahul Hameed K, Cab driver

    Chennai

I work for an app-based cab company only during the weekends. During the week I work as a cab driver for IT companies. It gives me decent money to run my family. I started driving six years ago and all credit for this goes to my wife. My brother taught me how to drive saying that it will come handy later. I had tried doing a lot of things before getting into driving. My wife suggested that I should start driving. She sold her jewellery to get me started. Apart from that, I sold some land that my family owned to buy the car.

When I started around six years ago, I used to drive tourists to outstation destinations like Udhagamandalam, Tirupati, Kodaikanal etc. It meant I was away from home most of the time. I missed my family, but I didn’t understand the repercussions of it until my son told me that he didn’t get to see me much. My son is 10, he was even younger then. I then decided to stop trips out of Chennai and drive only within the city. Working for the IT sector gives me a steady income. Since the offices are closed during the weekends, I drive for an app-absed cab service for the extra income. I don’t like to sit idle. The only thing I have not done is work as a security guard. Maybe I will do that when I get older. Life is uncertain, so you never know.

My life has not been easy. I struggled through my childhood and have done all kinds of odd jobs – I have worked in iron casting workshops, served tables in a hotel, started a business of my own that miserably failed. I believe that people should never give up. Life is bound to throw many hurdles but we have to be strong and face them. I try teaching the same to my children. I have a son who is 10 and a daughter who is 7. They have big dreams and my aim is to fulfil them.
