The Pamban road bridge across the Palk Strait, which links this island town with the main land, has developed a crack in the middle, prompting officials to regulate the traffic to one side of the bridge, NHAI officials said.

The iron couplings on Pamban bridge that are meant for strengthening the structure got damaged and the iron screws from the couplings have popped out. Tourist coming to Rameswaram noticed them and formed a barricade preventing others from travelling on the damaged portion. Police and Highway Department officials rushed to the spot and started the repair works. They noticed cracks on the bridge and explained that they may have been due to the loosening of the iron couplings. As the bridge had been constructed 28 years ago the couplings would have loosened up, officials involved in repairing the bridge said. Being a Sunday the number of tourists to the island was high and there was traffic jam on the bridge.
