“Even the glimpse of the iconic leader created some kind of impact in me and I have no words to explain it,” says G Ramakrishnan (GR), state secretary, CPM.
Ramakrishnan is the only Communist leader from the state to have visited Cuba.
Recalling the moments at the Cuban conference with the DTNext, he said, “It was November 21, 1994, when the US and European Union (EU) imposed economic sanctions on Cuba. The curbs brought Communist-ruled states across the world stood solid behind Cuba and pulled it out of the crisis.”
A defiant Castro arranged the CSC and representatives from Communist nations and parties from all over the globe turned up to prove that Cuba was not alone.
“From India, a delegation of 42 comrades including late Harkishen Singh Surjeet, former general secretary and Polit Bureau member and some journalists participated in the CSC,” Ramakrishnan remembered.
