    Puducherry will institute award for the cleanest village in the Union Territory, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi said.

    This is to recognise efforts of the villagers in making their hamlet clean and hygienic. The award will be presented during the Republic Day celebrations, she said at a meeting with the residents of Veerampattinam village. Bedi has been visiting rural areas in the weekends as part of her “Swachh Puducherry Mission”. Stressing on the need to segregate solid waste at source and make the environment clean and hygienic, she said, this will have a cascading effect on conserving the funds spent for cleaning. The funds can be used for various socio-economic developmental projects. Earlier, when she visited Uravayaru, Veerampatinam and Kanuvaipet villages, she interacted with residents about segregation of garbage by every households.   According to a Rajnivas release here, as requested by the residents, the Swachhata Corporation was directed to collect the garbage by 8 am every day and that the beat officers and Anganwadi workers should co-opt to propagate the importance of segregation of garbage and spread the message of cleanliness. Dr.Bedi stressed on the importance of segregation of garbage for effective disposal of solid waste. Highlighting the necessity of keeping the household and the surrounding clean by segregating garbage at source, the LG said the funds used presently for cleaning could be utilised for socio-economic growth. She also said that it is being proposed to recognise and award the cleanest village on Republic Day. Several senior officials of the administration accompanied her.
