Reporter's Diary: Bank staff stretched to the limit on all sides
The demonetisation drive, currently underway is turning out to be bottomless pit of stories for the media. Ever since the government announced that demonetised currency notes could be used by people to pay their utility bills, reporters have fanned out to many of the petrol pumps, Corporation offices and electricity bill collection centres to mine a whole lot of data.

Interestingly, when this reporter went to a Chennai Metro Water office on Friday last, the AE and others present there maintained they had received instructions to stop accepting cash. However, a few calls to the assistant PRO brought some clarity and they began accepting cash.Â
Many residents gleefully said they were happy to lay-to-rest the currency they had fondly saved. The biggest eye-opener, however, came when one visited a nationalised bank in Alwarpet. Situated next to a college, the bank had a long line of customers waiting anxiously. Seasoned customers however took a shortcut to the back of the building.Â
The over worked bankers had to answer questions being posed not only by those who stood in front of them, but also those being shot from behind a window. The bank deputed a young staff to man the spot, but since she needed a number of clarifications from her senior, the staff had to make a 180 degree turn often. Â
