Reporter's Diary: Senior cop tapped for ‘tip’ after son applies for passport
The common man is used to certain demands made by officials, but not the police. An ADGP based in Chennai had the shock of his life, when a constable called him on his mobile phone from a district and demanded money for carrying out the passport verification procedure.

The ADGP’s son, who is studying at a premiere institute, had applied for a passport and the police constable, whose responsibility it was to verify the application, was unaware that the number he called belonged to a top police official.
“He had the audacity to call me and say, ‘the customary thing’ should be done as he was going to conduct the verification’. This happened in spite of my instructing the district SP to speed up the process of verification,” the ADGP said.
The furious ADGP then proceeded to give a dressing down to the SP, who desperately tried to defend her colleague, claiming that the application for verification was still with her and she had not forwarded that to the concerned police wing. But she could not explain how the police constable got the details and the phone number mentioned in the passport verification form. The fate of the police constable who demanded money directly from the ADGP for verification purposes remains unknown!
