Vaiko’s mother Mariammal had been a pillar of strength for the leader in his political pursuits and she had participated in various protests organised by the leader and his party. She died at the age of 98 on November 6, last year.
Her first death anniversary observance has been under way at Kalingapatty. On the occasion on Sunday observed at Vaiko’s house at his native village, the leader kept a silence fast. Large number of people paid their respects to Mariammal, but Vaiko sat in a corner and did not utter a single word to anyone. He also observed a fast for 12 hours, from 6 am to 6 pm as a mark of his respect to his beloved mother. He even shunned taking of water during the fast. Minnal Mohammed Ali, social media coordinator of the MDMK said Vaiko used to observe similar fasts during his father’s death a n n ive r s a r y which fall on April 5. He observed his mother’s death anniversary in the same way by observing a fast and being silent for the whole day.
