On Saturday, Balamani’s son and daughter-inlaw went to the latter’s home to celebrate the festival while the woman stayed back at home. After having her dinner, the victim had gone off to sleep locking her home from inside. When she was awakened by strange sounds inside her home, the woman realised that burglars had broken into her home and were stealing valuables.
“Immediately, she screamed out loud and tried to thwart the attempt when one of the burglars pushed her down,” police said. Balamani fell and hit her head against the wall. She started bleeding profusely. The thieves decamped with eight sovereign gold chain worn by the woman as well as several thousand rupees in cash. Police said that when the son and daughter-in-law returned home on Sunday morning, they found that the front door was open and Balamani lying dead. The Tiruppur police are investigating. Police suspect that only known persons could have committed the crime as the assailants were aware that the elderly woman was alone at home.
