Sudden downpour inundates roads, subways in Madurai
Several parts of Madurai witnessed heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening, which resulted in water logging in a couple of underground bridges in the city.

Rain which started around 7 pm on Wednesday evening was accompanied by thunder and lightning. People returning from offices and educational institutions were caught unawares.Â
Tallakulam, at the heart of the city, received the highest rainfall measured at 53 mm. It was followed by Madurai South with 52 mm and Mettupatti with 45 mm. Total rainfall recorded was 304.20 mm.Â
Due to the downpour, several subways were water-logged. The underground bridge at Avaniyapuram was completely inundated and two-wheeler riders were forced wade through hip-level water.
At the TVS Nagar bridge, water logging was so high that the bridge had to be closed for transport and people were forced to use alternate routes.
