Lorry falls off Basin Bridge, one dead
A trailer lorry with Andhra Pradesh registration number lost control while negotiating a curve on the Basin Bridge, hit the parapet wall and fell 20 feet down into the Buckingham Canal, killing the cleaner.

While the driver of the vehicle Parthipan (36), a native of Vyasarpadi, jumped out from the vehicle before the lorry reached the canal, cleaner Prakash (16), a resident of Vyasarpadi died in the fall.Â
The Washermanpet Traffic Investigation wing later arrested Prathipan and remanded him to judicial custody.Â
Late night mishapÂ
The accident took place around 2 am on Monday. Police said the lorry was returning after unloading the cargo at Walltax Road. When the lorry reached near Basin Bridge, the driver lost the control over the vehicle and it hit the side wall of the bridge.Â
In the impact, the wall gave in and the lorry turned turtle before falling into the canal below. While driver found his way out of danger, the cleaner was trapped inside the cabin as the lorry fell upside down. The passers-by who witnessed the accident immediately informed the Washermanpet police. Police rushed to the spot and started rescue operation.Â
Vehicle retrievedÂ
The Fire and Rescue personnel were also informed. When the rescue personnel got down to the lorry, they found the body of Prakash trapped inside the cabin and retrieved it. Driver Parthipan has been arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.Â
Police had to employ a huge crane to lift the vehicle out of the canal and it took police several hours to complete the operation.Â
