“There are at least 10 groups of informers in Ramji Nagar. When one group makes wealth all of a sudden, the other group’s informer sends information to the police in the state concerned.
They are well versed in many Indian languages and so it becomes easy for the other state police to keep in touch with these informers to nab culprits involved in looting in their respective areas”, said a source close to the Ramji Nagar thieves.
The source also said that each group would have knowledge of their opponents’ point of strike and informers alerts the police after they execute the assignment. The rivalry had even resulted in the abduction of informers on many occasions in the past.
One year back, K Amarnathan (65), an informer was kidnapped for alerting the police. Amarnathan had quit the ‘profession’ around 10 years back and became an informer after his sons went to China for employment reasons. Since he became close to police after giving important tips and played a vital role in recovery of articles worth several crores, his prime opponent one Kandan and Saravanan, who were also informers, had reportedly kidnapped him for a ransom of Rs 2 crore.
Later, Amarnathan was rescued from the abductors after paying an amount of Rs 4 lakh.
