The two thumb rules for operation of these gangs are: one adopting attention diversion technique and the other to have members of different age groups.

According to an ex-thief, they go in different age groups, i.e., juvenile, youth and middle aged persons. Initially, the juvenile will drop coins on the road before the victim and alert them about the coin and vanish from the place. The youngsters will wait for the person to bend and pick up the coins. The moment the victim touches the coin, the second team will lift the bag swiftly and pass it on to the middle aged persons. Instantly, the last group will board a bus or train and flee the spot.Â
The second tactic is, the juvenile will spit betel leave juice or banana juice on the dress of the victim and the second team will go with a bottle of water in the guise of cleaning the ‘shit’. By this time, the third team will strike and escape with the bag. The person who approaches the targeted persons would talk in a polite manner. Soon after the assignment, the entire gang will split and mix with the public. The mobile phones that the gang members use will have only fake names and addresses. They will keep on changing their numbers and even the instruments too. Moreover, they are skilful in handling electronic gadgets.Â
Other than jewels and money, they also set their eyes on costly electronic gadgets, including laptops, tabs and mobile phones.
