    Nominations galore for polls on day two

    A day after AIADMK Supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa released the candidates list for the local body elections in October, the candidates en masse filed their nomination papers across the State simultaneously on Tuesday. AIADMK heavyweight and former MLA JCD Prabhakaran and others submitted their papers before the election officials in Chennai.

    Meanwhile, the State Election Commission (SEC) said that 75,933 EVMs including 34,515 control units would be pressed into service in the civic elections. SEC received 12,000 EVMs from Odisha on Tuesday. A total of 42,610 EVMs in 20 districts were checked by technical staff from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) by Monday and checking of EVMs in the remaining 12 districts began on Tuesday. 

    A total of 2,17,500 ballot boxes including 6,000 jumbo ballot boxes were received from Andhra Pradesh would to be used in the civic elections, SEC said. The jumbo boxes are earmarked for Tiruchy, Ariyalur, Cudalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts.

    The SEC opened a roundthe-clock ‘complaints centre’ in its premises, a release said. Voters can access the centre through toll free numbers (1800 425 7072, 1800 425 7073 and 1800425 7075) landline numbers 044-2363 5011 and 0442363 5010 and fax 044-2363 1014, 2363 1024 and 2363 1074.
